Battery Recycling and Safe Disposal in Taranaki

When damaged or crushed, batteries can start fires in rubbish and recycling trucks and waste management facilities. Truck fires caused by batteries has become a common issue around New Zealand which puts our community and staff at risk.

Batteries also contain valuable materials that can be recovered and reused when they’re taken to the right drop‑off points. WasteMINZ has a handy map of battery recycling and disposal locations across New Zealand.

Preparing Batteries for Recycling

  • Separate damaged, rusty or leaking batteries and handle with gloves as they can cause skin burns.
  • Tape terminals (the two metal ends of batteries where power goes in and out), with non-conductive tape - regular sticky tape is fine. This prevents short circuits or sparks. Store batteries safely in a cool, dry place until you are able to take for recycling. * See notes under each District Council below for advice about damaged batteries
