Tyre Recycling

Tyres are now free to recycle with Tyrewise

Used tyres are now free to recycle in Aotearoa New Zealand. Thanks to Tyrewise, an accredited tyre stewardship scheme, you can take 5 tyres at a time to registered drop-off locations.

What is Tyrewise?

Tyrewise was created to prevent millions of tyres ending up landfill, being illegally stockpiled or dumped each year, so we can protect the health of both te taiao, our environment, and our hapori, communities.

Tyrewise is Aotearoa’s first regulated product stewardship scheme, which tracks tyres via a network of registered participants, throughout their life cycle, to ensure tyres are recycled and repurposed into other useful products.

Thanks to a small levy paid when new tyres are imported or manufactured, end‑of‑life tyres can be collected and recycled responsibly at no extra cost to the public

Found illegally dumped tyres?

Despite tyres now being free to recycle five at a time nationwide, we are still seeing tyres illegally dumped in our environment.

If you spot any tyres where they shouldn't be, please report this to your local council or call 0800 DUMPING.

About 150 used tyres, which equates to three trailer loads, were dumped in the Tapaue stream around February 12, 2026
